statement of intent
My chosen theme for my GCSE photography will be changing landscapes and I am going to show it by going many different places around England.I will specifically be focusing on the rural areas as I believe they will be the kinds of pictures to give me the marks I need for my specific grade. I have chosen this theme as this is a very big theme and work surrounding it is quite enormous to explore but in the end I get to specialize my skills and finer them to the better quality in a different class to most people and what I have learnt through out the photography course.
For my initial research in order to produce a unique, professional final piece, I intend to carry out my research differently in a variety like section, for example by visiting different Museums and art galleries and also researching different photographers on the internet for example photographers such as Glyn Davies and many more that are linked to Anglesey and changing landscape.I will also be focusing myself on looking at different varieties of changing in landscape themes and the main one I would like to focus specifically on the theme of seasons and time change in landscapes, I believe that this would be the most effective for me especially since I really admire the change in seasons and colour,so in advance I will look at photographers who have also mainly focused on seasons in their photography journey and I could also follow in their shadow to see if I can perfect my work like their work and then I can bring out mine own ideas which is what is going to make me stand out.
My main coursework or chosen theme was changing landscapes however the theme that I specifically chose to look at in this project is seasons, I chose it without hesitation because I believe not many students of the past have done anything like seasons and I'm quite sure it will be making me reach my effective marks and the highest grades possible.
To show progress through out my work I hope to start researching a few images about seasons and do the 5C's on them to effectively get an idea on what I might do in the future of this project, I then plan to go out sometimes and take pictures which are linked somewhat to any season whether I'm in the wrong season or not, for example If I am in the season of spring but I want to take an autumn picture if I used my mental effectively I would think about taking pictures of a rainy day and quite dark outside with gray theme'd landscape.I will then refine my images and develop them in any possible way to further excess my idea of my main concept "seasons" and possibly I could gain more ideas from them and plan again to go out sometime to take pictures, repeating that same cycle but with a hint of variety inside I could perfectly gain grades to exceed my target and show the progress.I could also preform SIRT's and any EBI's I get, I will improve myself by reaching that task at the same time learning what I have done wrong.
I would like to experiment by using a wide range of techniques on my camera but mainly the "landscape" setting which I believe has its own amazing parts and specific harmonization of the settings for example ISO 6400, White balance Cloudy , Aperture 9.6 , Manual 1/200 etc. I can also try to experiment with different lens as they extend and the effects they provide would be highly effective as I am looking changing in landscapes therefore I would need lens that focus on the entire landscapes.Something I would also like to achieve is by using a setting which is quite uncommon for the cameras I use but maybe I could try somehow to use it , I would like to take pictures of a waterfall or a stream by using the polarization filter as I believe this is the sort of photography that photographers are commonly doing in the 21 century. It has also been recommended as the best setting to use in photography and therefore I would like also experiment on Polarization filter.
In doing this project, I want to learn more about the theme of "seasons" in changing in landscapes , I also intend to carry out a variety of research towards photographers and art galleries. In the end I hope to specialize and finalize the important skills I have learnt through this coursework and successfully add them on to my final gallery.
I see my final format being a gallery of the amazing images I have taken and also the images being refined on Photoshop, and present in a manner of excellence to reach the final important grade I hope and require.
Doing this project i am hoping to create more knowledge about certain landscapes and carry out a research on my chosen photographers. I also hope to finalize the skills i have learnt throughout this whole photography course and successfully put them into my final piece.
As i reach my final outcome, i intend to have completed galleries containing my best images. Some of the galleries will represent the natural images taken however some of the galleries will show the effect developed on Photoshop and how they have been improved. I also hope to create an installation to give a visual representation of images related to my theme, To make my work stand out become unique to others and also creative i will portray a personal presentation of my own ability.

In this photograph Adam Burton has taken a picture of the north Devon coast where he has put together all the features to make an astonishing photograph. The colors that have been used are blend in very well which crates the calm, soothing atmosphere. A golden light has also been captured by the photographer as he has taken full advantage of the time the picture was taken. The photographer has also taken a picture with contrast of many extravagant colors from going from the crispness of the sand to much lighter waves and then back to much darker colors in the clouds. The light brown color of the sand contrasts to the white, tranquil waves travelling over it which creates the texture in the picture. A lot of texture is also being created by the dark rocks located on the beach. Your eyes are also attracted to the colors of the sunset shining behind the clouds. Rule of thirds has been cleverly applied on this picture as the photographer must of used a tripod. 1/3 is the rocks which captures your eye as soon as your look at the picture. this is also known as the sweet spot as it grabs your attention. I believe another sweet spot could be said to be the sunset in the far background as it is very attractive to you when looking at the photograph and you focus on its beauty a lot. 2/3 is the waves stroking above the sand all the way to the setting horizon, these waves would of had to have been taken using a medium shutter speed to capture the light rays and slow movement of the water waves. The misty clouds at the far background represent 3/3 of the top half of the photo which layers out the whole photograph separating it from the beach and water from the sky above. The foreground also has detail with the much smaller rocks located on the beach creating contrast between them and the much lighter sand. The fade from a darker tone to a much lighter sea area shows to depth of field used as you can see it goes off towards the distance. The photographer has also created a vanishing point within this picture being located being the rocks as when you look towards the sea you notice how it suddenly vanishes at that point.

- The things that I like about the image is the sun in the background because it draws my eye straight to it as it is bright, clear and it stands out, I also like the lighthouse in the middle of the image because that is clearly what the photographer was clearly trying to focus on as it was right in the middle. What I don't like about the image is the rocks right at the front of the picture because I don't think they look very nice and they are just in the way. I can use this image to inspire me because it is similar to the pictures that I planned to take. This is a very good and detailed picture as the photographer has taken it evaluating the effects of the sun setting and the environment getting darker and darker. This then creates a very aesthetic sense towards the picture making it appealing to look at. I really like the softness of colors that are included in the picture and contrasts from the island with the lighthouse to the sea and sky. I can use this to inspire me to try and take pictures at that magical moment when it is perfect with light balance with ISO.
Content:
- in this picture you can see the lighthouse which is on top of the mountain in the middle of the sea. I think that it looks like a new image because it looks quite modern and it isn't dull because it is in colour and not black and white. This picture was taken in Anglesey, Wales. In the picture there is no people in sight which gives the effect that not many people go here and that it is quite quiet there. In the background of the picture you can clearly see the sunset in the horizon under the clouds which shows us that this image was taken in the night time as it was beginning to get dark. The image only has a lighthouse at the top of the mountain which shows that it is the only one there and nothing else.In the photograph is south stack lighthouse in Anglesey at sunset which is taken at a far angle capturing the beauty of the island and it makes you see all the detail of it as well. It looks to be a new picture as it is in clear color showing of the features of the island with the lovely greenery and the waves crashing against it, In the background the sun appears to be setting it look like a nice picture below the grey, stormy clouds.
Connection:
- The theme of this picture is relevant to mine as they both evaluate certain landscapes so this link to my work as we have already took pictures of this lighthouse and is very similar in the content and to how it has been taken. I think it would be a good idea to keep doing pictures as they they look very appealing and are effective. .It relates to all the landmarks i have done and how i have caught them with the sun set in the background and shallow rocks in the foreground. This image links to my work and is relevant to it because I will be going to visit Anglesey and probably go to this lighthouse. The image links to my work because it shows the landscape of the sea and and the background. In my opinion I don't think there is a message behind this image because there is no people in the picture which may suggest that it has closed down. I would think about using this picture as inspiration for my work because it is clear and I think it is a very interesting and professional image.
Composition:
- The exact focus point on this picture would be the very lighthouse above situated on the island as it is the heart of the picture however the sunset is also a big thing to look at as it is composed very well and meets the rule of thirds because it is placed in those guidelines where the whole picture is pretty much taken from a high up place to capture every detail. The lighting also creates a contrast between the many colors which then draws your eye in to it and you focus on all the picture with the deep depth of field. This picture was taken at a birds eye view as we are looking down at the lighthouse, rocks and the crashing waves. The contrast between the red, orange and yellow sun to the blue sea shows a hard contrast. The lighthouse is towards the top right of the picture, the sun is in the top left corner and the rocks/mountain is at the bottom of the image to the middle this clearly shows that the photographer used the rule of thirds in this image. My eye is drawn to the sun in the background because it is bright and it stands out which brings my attention to the sun. The foreground of this image is the rocks, the middle ground of the image is the lighthouse and the background is the sun and the clouds in the horizon.
Context:
- The picture is called 'red flash white flash' taken from south stack, angelsey and shows the south stack lighthouse which was built of the coast of holy island. It was built in 1809 to warn ships of the dangerous rocks below. This picture was taken by a photographer called 'Glyn Davies', who is a Cornish photographer who achieved an honours degree in photography. In 2002 he set up a photography gallery to focus on his personal landscape work. Two of his published books called 'Anglesey Landscapes' were bought by the prime minister as a royal wedding gift for Prince William and Kate Middleton. This picture is called

Content:
- In the picture, I see hills on the horizon, covering a sunset which is coloring the sky a soft, calming yellow. Shallow water runs through the middle of the hills, with one rock in the centre of the whole image, submerged above the water, surrounded by the thin clear ocean. It is hard to tell whether the image is new or not, since everything within the photo is natural, there are no buildings or clothes that would indicate the era. However, from the detail of the photo, I would say the photo is fairly new, since the photographer has a camera that can take clear, crisp images, and can change the shutter speed to improve the pictures aesthetics. The photo is also in colour, which I think helps people see the beauty in this image, as the sea is a calm, clear blue, and the soft yellow in the sky gives off a relaxed tone within the picture. I believe the theme of this image could be 'Natural World', as nothing in this image is man-made, artificial or set up. Everything is exactly how it is supposed to be and still looks really good.
Composition:
- I believe the focus point of this image is a birds eye view because I believe it to be too far off from a worms eye view or a normal view. The lighting is quite soft in my opinion and on the right side it creates a sense of radiant from the sun setting but you cant see it the color does give a radiant vibe, in contrast to the gray cloudy side which creates a sense of mystery yet quite a soft mystery.I believe they have used rule of thirds as if you imagine the lines that apply to it you can easily determine the effect of it being used.My eye was instantly drawn to the rock in the center ground and I believe the photographer has achieved this by editing parts of the image to mainly focus on that rock, for example increasing the brightness on the rock and decreasing it on the small hills in the background. The depth of field is heavily deep in my opinion because to be able to capture all that in one go creates a sense of big yet softness as well which what I hope to achieve in the future. I'm quite this photographer has used a tripod as the image looks to clear and centered to being taken on hand, they could have possibly edited as well to make it look that way however I am only hypothesizing. There is a interesting background and I am talking about the upper area of the background like clouds and the contrast as well which is what made this image an image for her or him to show.
Connection:
- I believe the theme of this image is 'Natural World', taking fantastic photos using things that are naturally in place, with nothing set up or man-made about the image. This is relevant to my work as I am also going to take landscape photo of natural settings, as I believe they give off a more beautiful, fresh look, when combined with the right camera settings. The theme of this image I believe is landscapes or sea effect. This links to my theme because they are both mainly focusing on landscapes and structure but also color.I also think this has a hint of "seasons" in with the clouds being grey and dark and contrast the orange and yellow which I think is a contrast from winter to spring or it could be from summer to autumn which is the content of the image and I would like to focus on that as well. The image I believe was taken on a windy evening time with the sun setting at one side and the night rising at the other with a perfect white balance ratio which gave a pretty interesting effect towards it.
comment:
- I like this photo as the look of the waves is really attractive and eye catching and how the rock has been placed in the foreground is a nice look and it also makes you focus on it as it is your main point of view. The dark clouds in the background also add a really nice effect going into darker light. i also like the contrast at the top of image and the instant focus on the rock to middle bottom which a creates a soft structure wise landscape photo, the main strength in my opinion is the settings on the camera she/he used, the possible editing and the perfect timing of the image because I am sure she/he has planned this out but I believe they haven't planned to take such an amazing image therefore it was great timing. What I don't like about the image that they could have added more to the orange/yellow like color to balance it out in editing but they if they weren't editing then therefore they had no power or control over that which is perfectly fine, mostly I like this image quite a lot and there isn't anything bad I could talk about. I think there is a meaning to this image and it shows quite perfectly with both sides of the color in the clouds and the rock in the middle being the friends of both sides but always stopping them in bad times I believe it reflects how humans are and feel about what they do and who they trust, for example the cloudy dark area could be the bully but who is also your friend and the victim who is also your friend is the light area and your the friend in the middle who stops the problem all the time, the rock.
context
- This image was taken Glyn Davies while she was in Anglesey taking her images, the time period it was taken I believe is somewhat sun set, evening time and that has influenced the image heavily as the person capturing the image did it at the right time in order to acquire the perfect aspects of the photo.

Phil Norton's photoHe has put together the pictures attributes to make a great photo. He uses the variety of colors on the rocks to stand alone upon the waves as they crash into them. Those waves have also probably been taken with a slow shutter speed to make use of the look from them. The background also consists of the beautiful colors mixed with the sky and the clouds.
This is a picture i have taken my self to resemble Phil Norton's work and how he captures his own photos.

A broad theme of changing landscapes is the main focus of this project. From urban to natural, winter to summer, this project will explore the various ways we see the world we live in. This project will require more time to complete as landscapes are not limited to my school in one time of year. I plan to experiment with different methods and compositions, changing camera settings such as aperture and shutter speed to see the best way to capture the Earth at that time and place, dependent on natural factors such as time, brightness, seasons and landforms. In order to broaden my depth of understanding, my initial research will contain landscape images of varying styles, seeing the different ways landscapes can be captured and the effect it has. Not only this, but I could also possibly visit art galleries and museums containing these types of images so that it is clear to me how the very best shots are captured. So that my understanding of landscapes themselves is also consolidated, I can attend geography trips and go on holiday to see unique and interesting landforms. I will take inspiration from the works of artists and photographers who specialise in landscape photography, such as Thomas Heaton. This will be beneficial because, as this is their full-time job, they are professionals at viewing and knowing how to shoot various landscapes, allowing me to take inspiration from their interesting compositions, raising the standard of my own work. As this project follows a huge range of changing landscapes, I will do photoshoots and take images whenever I come across a visually appealing space, for example a beautiful skyline or a vast mountain range. In order to do this, I must attend photography trips or even plan visits to different places to make my work unique. Another method of differentiating my images is by allowing myself to experiment with taking images

1. what was the project theme and what did you think of it?
The project theme was landscapes and i thought that it was a really good theme as it allowed me to capture pictures of a variety of landscapes changing from urban in Angelsey to a rural destination of Manchester and Salford. It was very fun to see the change in area in different places and capture the areas at different times of the day to improve how my pictures looked as a whole. My first thoughts about this theme were pretty simple and that i did like the sound of it and looking at different places and even after developing my work i felt the same and was always interested about it.

2. what part of the project did you enjoy the most/found the most interesting?
The part i enjoyed the most was going on the trips and taking the pictures we needed as they were all fun adventures and i found it the most interesting travelling to different areas to take a variety of pictures that involved the theme. Being a very intetresting theme this made it a lot better as i could travel to a lot of places that i wouldn't usually go to and take a lot of good pictures

3. What new techniques have you experienced?
I have experienced a variety of new and exciting techniques such as ones on Photoshop like the puppet warp where i was able to bend and manipulate objects/buildings to the way i want them and make the look really interesting and like many illusions. A technique i also learnt was a way to make certain shapes from photos and turn it into a collage of loads of different pictures on a background.
