The rule of thirds is a "rule of thumb" or guideline which applies to the process of composing visual images such as designs, films, paintings, and photographs. The rule of thirds is a concept in video and film production in which the frame is divided into nine imaginary sections, as illustrated on the right. This creates reference points which act as guides for framing the image. ... In this shot, the eyes are placed approximately 1/3 of the way down the frame. The guideline proposes that an image should be imagined as divided into nine equal parts by two equally spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines, and that important composition elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections. Proponents of the technique claim that aligning a subject with these points creates more tension, energy and interest in the composition than simply centering the subject.
We target our image so that we've got it lined up with the sweet spots as it can help you focus on the main subject of the image.
Using this technique it draws the viewers eyes into the composition instead of glaring at other points such as the center of the image

This is my best picture as i have mentally divided my image by adding 2 horizontal and 2 vertical line in my head and have then positioned the important elements in the scene along those lines and at the point they meet. It has also resulted in a very crisp and clear image.
I think this is my worse picture as i have picture the vertical and horizontal lines in my head although the image itself is very blurred and unfocused and the depth of the field is very shallow..
